The Mineral Leasing Act of 1920
This Federal Law authorizes and governs the leasing of public lands for developing the deposits of coal, petroleum, natural gas and other hydrocarbons, in addition to phosphates, sodium, sulfer, and potassium.
Under the Act, anyone can nominate a piece of public land for gas and oil development. After doing so, the BLM (Bureau of Land Management) will review and sent to a lease auction where the highest bidder is awarded the usage rights.
